Privacy Policy
What TypeShift collects when you use the site or come to a workshop, why, who can see it, and how to have it changed or deleted.
Last updated: October 13, 2026
1. Who we are
TypeShift runs free, hands-on AI workshops for high school and university students, in Calgary and online. It is run by volunteers. TypeShift is responsible for the personal information described here, and the organizing team answers questions about it at info@typeshift.ca.
2. What we collect
Your account
You sign in with Google, GitHub, a link sent to your email, or a code sent to your phone by text message. We never see or store a password. From your sign-in we keep your name, your email address, your phone number if you sign in by phone, and the profile photo Google or GitHub provides. On your profile you can also add a bio, a website, social links and a photo of your choosing.
Workshops you register for
When you register, we record the workshop with your name and email address, so we can confirm your place and know who is coming.
Series you follow
When you follow a series, we keep your email address and whether you want emails about it. Registering for a workshop also follows its series, so you hear when it adds another workshop. If you stop following a series, we note when, so registering again doesn't follow it for you. You can turn the emails off at any time (see Emails).
Applications and proposals
When you apply to help, we keep what you write in the form:
- Speakers: your name, email, phone number, title, company, location, bio, expertise, experience, why you want to speak and links, and any workshop you propose. Your photo is the one from your Google or GitHub sign-in, unless organizers add another.
- Mentors: your name, email, title, company, a description of yourself, availability, skills, links, why you want to mentor, and who referred you.
- Volunteers: your name, email, a description of yourself, how you would like to help, your interests, and the profile you choose to show if you are accepted.
Messages
The contact form opens your own email app. We receive what you send to info@typeshift.ca, like any other email.
Photos and recordings
Photos are taken at workshops, and some workshops are recorded (see Photos and recordings).
How the site is used
Google Analytics tells us which pages are visited and which buttons are used, with the kind of device and browser, and an approximate location worked out from the internet address. When you are signed in, it also gets your account's ID number, a code that isn't your name or email, so we can tell how many people come back. Page addresses reach it without anything personal in them. Our servers also keep records of requests, including internet addresses, for a short time to keep the site secure and fix problems.
We don't ask for your age, school or grade. The only exception: a volunteer who wants to be listed on the site confirms they are 18 or older, or have a parent's or guardian's permission.
3. How we use it
- To run your account, register you for workshops and send you their details.
- To tell you about new workshops in the series you follow.
- To review applications and proposals, and to reply to you.
- To show the profiles of accepted speakers, the team and listed volunteers.
- To keep workshops safe and enforce the Code of Conduct.
- To improve the site and plan future workshops.
We don't sell or rent your information, we don't show ads, and we don't give your contact details to partners or sponsors.
4. What is public
Some information is shown on the site for anyone to see:
- Speakers, once accepted: the name, title, company, location, bio, expertise, photo and links from the application. Never the email address or phone number.
- The team: each organizer's name, role, description, photo and hashtags.
- Volunteers who choose to be listed: the name, photo, interests and short description they choose. Being listed is optional, and needs the volunteer to be 18 or older or to have a parent's or guardian's permission.
- The Archive: workshop photos, recordings and recaps.
Your own profile isn't shown to anyone else on the site. Its privacy settings choose what other members would see if member profiles are added, and we will update this policy before they are.
Everything else, including your registrations, the series you follow, applications, and your email address and phone number, is seen only by TypeShift's organizers.
5. Emails
We send email only about TypeShift's workshops:
- A confirmation when you register for a workshop.
- If a workshop you registered for is cancelled, an email saying so, and another if it goes ahead after all.
- An announcement when a series you follow adds a workshop. A special event is announced to everyone who follows any series. If a workshop was announced before its registration opened, a second email when it opens, unless you have already registered.
- Updates about an application you made.
Every announcement, and every email saying registration has opened, has an unsubscribe link. You can also turn emails off, or stop following a series, under My Events on your profile. Confirmations, and the emails saying a workshop you registered for was cancelled or is back on, are sent whatever your settings, since they are about your own registration. We have no newsletter, and we never share or sell our email lists.
6. Photos and recordings
We take photos at workshops and record some of them. They go in the Archive, on the site's pages, including the home page, and on TypeShift's social media. When an online workshop is recorded, you may appear in the recording if your camera or microphone is on.
If you would rather not be photographed, tell an organizer at the workshop. If a photo or recording of you is already up and you want it taken down, email info@typeshift.ca and we will remove it.
8. Where it is stored
Our information is held by Google Cloud and the services above, on servers in the United States and possibly other countries. While it is there, it is subject to those countries' laws, and their authorities may be able to see it.
10. How long we keep it
- Your account and profile: until you ask us to delete them.
- Your registrations: as the record of who took part in each workshop. You can cancel one before the workshop starts.
- The series you follow: until you stop following it, after which we keep only the date you stopped.
- Applications and proposals: while they are being decided and while you take part, and until you ask us to delete them.
- Photos and recordings: while they are useful to the Archive, or until you ask us to remove one of you.
- Google Analytics data: no more than 14 months.
11. Your choices and rights
- See and correct your details on your profile page.
- Cancel a registration on the workshop's series page or the calendar, before it starts.
- Stop following a series, or turn its emails off, under My Events.
- Hide your volunteer listing at any time.
- Ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing info@typeshift.ca. We will answer within 30 days.
If you aren't satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
12. Young people
Our workshops are for high school and university students, and anyone curious is welcome. If you are under 13, a parent or guardian should create your account or give you permission to use the site.
A parent or guardian can ask to see, correct or delete their child's information by emailing info@typeshift.ca.
13. Keeping it safe
Only TypeShift's organizers can see personal information, and the database is reached only through our own server, never directly from the browser. We never store passwords. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach puts your information at risk, we will tell you, as the law requires.
14. Changes to this policy
When we change this policy, we update it here and change the date at the top. If a change matters to how we use your information, we will say so on the site or by email before it takes effect.
15. Contact
Questions, requests and concerns about privacy go to info@typeshift.ca. See also our Terms of Use.
